10 Towns Where Tiny Homes Are Growing in Popularity: Report

In recent years, tiny homes have become an increasingly popular option for individuals hoping to own a home without breaking the bank. 

Tiny homes, typically defined as houses under 500 square feet, first began popping up in the wake of the 2007 and 2008 financial crisis. At the time, thousands lost their homes due to unemployment or foreclosure. Since then, the movement has caught on. 

While the number of tiny homes in the country is still quite small, there are 10 towns where plenty of home buyers are embracing the trend, according to data from Realtor.com. The firm identified single-family homes for sale in the past year spanning less than 500 square feet as well as single-family homes mentioning "tiny home" in the listing and have square footage below 1,500. 

10. Harrison, Michigan

In Harrison, at least 5% of all listings are tiny homes. The median tiny-home listing price is $44,700, and the median size is 381 square feet.

9. South Kingstown, Rhode Island

Like Harrison, 5% of all home listings are tiny homes. The median price of tiny homes in South Kingstown is $229,900, and the median size is 366 square feet. 

8. Cleveland, Georgia

At least 5% of all listings in Cleveland are marketed as tiny homes. The median tiny home list price in Cleveland is $139,740, while the median size is 400 square feet.

7. Cosby, Tennessee

Tiny homes make up 9% of all listings in Cosby. The median tiny-home list price is $145,000, and the median size is 441 square feet.

6. Port Isabel, Texas

Placing sixth on Realtor's list is Port Isabel, where tiny homes make up 10% of all listings. The median list price of tiny homes in Port Isabel is $169,000, while the median size is 397 square feet.

5. Wilmington, Illinois

At least 11% of all homes listed in Wilmington are tiny homes, with the median home price at $109,900. The median size of tiny homes in Wilmington is 460 square feet.

4. Ocean View, Hawaii

At least 12% of all homes listed in Ocean View are tiny homes. The median list price of tiny homes in the town is $102,250, and the median size is 384 square feet.

3. Willow, Alaska

Eighteen percent of homes listed in Willow are tiny homes, according to Realtor. The median list price is $99,500, and the median size is 288 square feet.

2. Dennis Port, Massachusetts

In Dennis Port, 22% of homes listed for sale are tiny homes. The median list price is $249,900, and the median size is 413 square feet.

1. Landers, California

Topping Realtor's list is Landers in California, where tiny homes make up 28% of all listings. The median list price is $180,000, and the median size if 398 square feet.
