What is Cottagecore?

Cottagecore, also known as Farmcore or Countrycore is an aesthetic design inspired by romantic western agricultural life. It focuses on having a simple and harmonious life with nature.

Wovn Home founder Davina Ogilvie said that the cottagecore aesthetic is also a nod to agricultural skills and crafts.

"As a concept, it embraces a simpler, sustainable existence that is more harmonious with nature,": Ogilvie told Architectural Digest.

"Aesthetically, it's a nod to the traditional English countryside style, romantic and nostalgic," she added.

So when cottagecore starts invading homes and social media feeds? Some said that the trend initially began in 2017, but it emerged in 2019, thanks to its popularity on TikTok.

CottagecoreBlackFolk Instagram account founder Noemie Sérieux said that from "blooming," the cottagecore trend turned into "booming" when the coronavirus quarantine hit last year.

"With ample time on our hands when the pandemic hit and quarantine became commonplace across the globe, we turned to finding fulfillment and purpose outside of our monetary potential-and cottagecore was the perfect vehicle," Noemie explained.

Elements of Cottagecore Aesthetic

According to tableware and home goods company founder Molly Hatch, there are no specific key elements or decor to achieve the ultimate cottagecore aesthetic.

"For me, cottagecore is about coziness at home," Hatch said.

But as far as components are concerned, cottagecore should bring natural elements as decorative items indoors.

"Dried flowers, fresh flowers, houseplants-along with a natural color palette with neutrals and warm tones," Hatch said.

The design also embodies a pack of gorgeous florals, vintage botanical prints, old-school handicrafts, and romantic string lights-it like vintage, farm, and country style infused into one nostalgic and ethereal vibe.

Below are some ideas and inspiration to help you start with your cottagecore journey:

Botanical Bedding - If you're afraid to go all out at first, start unleashing the cottagecore in the bedroom. Look for vintage-inspired botanical bed sheets with dainty flowers and foliage to get that romantic vibe.

Floating Planters - Since cottagecore is all about bringing outdoor elements indoor, bring in some greenery while maintaining the vintage vibe with terrarium plant holders. Place it on your favorite corner and put fresh plants or flowers.

Fairy Lights - a cottagecore aesthetic would not be complete without a row or two of sparkling string lights. Look for indoor and outdoor-friendly LED fairy lights that you can hang in the bedroom, patio, or roof deck.
