One of the unspoken needs of humans is sleep. This is important for every person's health and well-being. It also contributes to the proper functioning of the brain. Without adequate sleep, a person can experience side effects, and the severity can depend on a person's sleep quality.

To prevent these side effects, remember to have an adequate amount of sleep. Some tips that help promote better sleep include lying down on a good mattress. Good quality mattresses never come cheap, so its best to invest in them and keep it in good shape.

This won't only promote better sleep quality but also save you money since you won't be buying a mattress anytime soon. Make sure you avoid these habits to prolong the life of your mattress.

Do not sit or jump onto the mattress

Mattresses are made to evenly hold a person's weight while they're lying down. Inside the mattress are springs and padding that make the mattress feel like clouds.

When you lay down on these springs, they don't push down as much as when you stand or sit on them. When we jump on the bed, weight is concentrated in that small area where you landed. Over time, such habits can weaken and damage the mattress. So, it's best not to let kids jump and step on your bed.

Do not flip your mattress if its meant to be slept on one side only

Mattresses these days are designed to be tougher and more comfortable on one side than the other. This is because one side is designed to be slept on while the other is just supposed to stay under.

While in the old days, the top and underside of the mattress are the same. This made it easy to deform if the mattress wasn't flipped every three months.

Do not skip on the mattress cover

One of the most damaging things that you can do to your mattress is exposing it to moisture and other elements that it doesn't really need. Elements like sweat, body oils, dust particles, and even dead skin cells can easily find their way into your mattress.

Although you may not notice it immediately, moisture in your mattress can be inviting to all sorts of bad elements. This is why you shouldn't skip a mattress cover. It doesn't only keep your mattress protected. It also keeps it from smelling like old socks.

Do not keep your mattress in the dark

Mattresses are a great place for fungus and mushrooms to grow in. So, it is important not to put it in a moist and dark environment, or you're most likely to be needing a mattress replacement soon.

Instead of stashing it in the darkness of your room, expose it to adequate sunlight every now and then.

You can also skip putting on new sets of bed sheets immediately after you remove the dirty ones. This will give your bedsheet some time to "breathe." This won't only make your mattress cleaner, but it will also make it smell fresher.

Do not keep your bed linens on for too long

Your sheets, pillowcases, mattress cover, sheets, and other linens constantly absorb dead skin cells, saliva, and sweat. These elements can eventually get into your mattress, and you may not even know it, especially if you don't replace them that often.

Make sure you clean your bed every now and then and wash your bed linens, so they always stay fresh and clean.
