Moving Tips: Four Good Ways to Move with a Limited Budget

It is true that moving is expensive. However, with proper planning and timing, moving does not have to cost too much.

Moving may cost around $1,170 if you are moving within the state, and more than $5,630 if moving from state to state. It will be a lot of money, mostly for people who are just starting out, based on the American Moving & Storage Association.

Here are some ways to cut the price if the moving cost is more expensive than your first month's rent and deposit.

For Rent suggests that you should plan ahead. The earlier you plan your move, the more money you will save. Last minute planning will give you a limited option. "With a little bit of planning, you can save a significant amount of money, which you can invest in your new home," says Kevin Flaherty, Dolly's marketing manager. Dolly is a mobile app in Seattle and Chicago that helps people find large truck or moving equipment owners.

Another tip is to move during off-season. Cold-weather months are the slowest season for moving, while March-September is the busiest. If you move during off-season, movers will give you the lowest quote as possible as they are in need of business. You also want to avoid moving at the end of the month. Off-peak days are also a good timing to save money.

Do not pay for boxes. While boxes are essential for moving, there are many ways to get it for free. You may bring empty boxes from your workplace or office. Offices have printer-paper boxes and other boxes that were used for other supplies and equipment. These are strong and large enough to carry most items.

Post on social media and ask your friends who just moved for their used boxes. Take advantage of Freecycle and Craigslist free section or you may look around the neighborhood. Mid-sized stores have plenty of boxes that they want to get rid of. They would be happy to give it to you for free!

Finally, you may opt to sell some of your stuff. By doing so, you can earn extra cash. It will also lessen your baggage, which can save you some bucks.
