Keeping your home clean and tidy always comes with heaps of benefits. A homeowner should also keep in mind that he needs to take care of the rest of his property - including the lawn. After all, it is the first thing that people see before they step through your door. But how does one keep this part of the property healthy? Here are a few tips you can try out:

Lawn care tips for a healthier yard

Keep it trimmed

Well-trimmed lawns don't just look good. Trimming lawns require a lot of labor and more time. Make sure you give your yard its much needed TLC. Of course, you can use motorized lawnmowers, but you can also use electric ones to decrease the pollution you contribute to the environment. The grass should also be watered, so it keeps its lush green color.

Select the perfect grass

There are different types of grasses, and each has its pros and cons. The right kind of grass doesn't only help create a healthier-looking lawn. It also contributes to water consumption. Even the time that you water the grass can have noticeable effects on your water bill.

For example, Kentucky bluegrasses thrive better in colder areas in the North. Bermuda grass, on the other hand, does better in warmer places.

Check the soil

Some people tend to resort to applying fertilizer even without the slightest knowledge about soil and compost. It is important that you check the soil to see what nutrients it needs and what it already has. If needed, you can top the soil with compost, sand, or peat for grasses to grow greener and stronger.

Some brands offer free soil testing. But if there's none in your area, you can consider buying a soil testing kit right off the market. Once you know what it needs, you can compost, peat, or add topsoil to add more of the nutrients your lawn needs. You can opt to buy these from gardening supply shops or compost your own.

Don't forget to aerate

Aerating your lawn is when you make holes on them by driving a stick or a similar tool to the soil. Though not many people know this, aerating the lawn can be vital to its outcome. Thanks to proper aeration methods, the soil can get the water, sunlight, and fertilizer so the plant roots can get as much as they need.

The best time to aerate is in the growing season. You can also try applying an even layer of the compost you made. This won't only give nutrients to the grass but also help it to recover fully.

Maintain proper height

The best height for most grasses is set between 2 and 2.5 inches. Thanks to the extra length, the grass can absorb extra sunlight from the surroundings. The extra height also prevents it from drying out too quickly.
