A candy-colored Dakota house is on sale for $16 million. But the big question is, has Judy Garland really ever lived in the apartment?
According to The Real Deal, the 4,700-square-foot apartment is owned by the late Jacqueline Bikoff, an Iranian descent ballerina and pianist, who was a fixture on the Studio 45 scene. The report says that the apartment initially belonged to Judy Garland before Bikoff moved in and hired Sasha Bikoff, her 25-year-old daughter, to give the place an eccentric makeover.
The Bikoff family is now selling this three-bedroom, three-bathroom property for $16.7 million. Katherine Gauthier, a broker from Douglas Elliman, said she is slightly doubtful about the Garland claims. Bikoff bought the apartment from Roy Welland and Christal Henner, championship bridge players, for $13 million in 2010.
However, no matter what the familial relation is, the renovation got enough praises for a feature in the Times and design blogs, as reported by Observer.
"The thing that Sasha did such a good job on is that it really rings true with the integrity of the building," Gauthier told the Observer. "Sasha did an incredible job with the light fixtures and the tone. It's just beautiful; luminous. The palette is warm and it's very inviting. It feels personable, not done."
The apartment is located in Central Park West building. It also features seven wood-burning fireplaces and 13-foot ceilings, and has Yoko Ono as a neighbor.
"The thing that super stands out, aside from the color palette, which is extraordinary, is that she did this high gloss lacquer, so all of the walls glisten-when you walk in there, they illuminate!" Gauthier added.
It really does stand-out; the dining room has Tiffany blue walls and the dining table is surrounded by twelve peach-colored chairs. One of the bedrooms is totally purple including palm tree-accented lavender walls.
