Does Your Furniture Have Expiration Dates?

Believe it or not, even your furniture pieces at home have expiration dates. While their average lifespan do not run as quickly as your food on the countertop, it is good to know when you should replace your items at home.

According to Elle Decor, mattresses, shower curtain liners, carpets, bath mats, pillows, sofas, washers and dryers all have specific expiration dates. While it has been a common notion that as long as these items can still be used are still good to go, they may actually need to be replaced after a certain number of years.

Lifehacker, however, noted that your furniture's average lifespan will of course depend on the way you cared for these things.

When it comes to mattress, the publication noted that you should change this every 8-10 years. Whether you are using a memory foam, a spring mattress or a water bed, the average lifespan is the same for all types.

While replacing a mattress every 8 or 10 years seems like a good option, your pillows, however, require frequent changing. If you are not into the habit of regularly cleaning your pillows, then you need to change them every 6 months.

As for shower liners, the publication suggested on replacing them every 3-12 months, as these items can be a haven for molds and mildew, especially because they are often exposed to water.

Carpets, on the other hand, will have different expiration dates depending on their types and grades. According to the outlet, the least expensive carpets are good for 1-5 years. Medium-grade and high-end carpets can go for as long as 5-15 and 15-25 years, respectively.

Sofas will have an average lifespan that is somewhat similar to your mattresses, as these require changing every 7-15 years, depending on the quality, model and how you treat your sofa.

When it comes to washers and dryers, most people think that as long as these appliances aren't breaking down, then it means they're still good to use. However, the outlet noted that these items need to be changed every 10-15 years.
