'Captain America 3: Civil War' Movie, Trailer & Plot: Actor Daniel Bruhl Confirmed as Film Villain

The third installment of Marvel's popular "Captain America" franchise has found one of its villains.

On its website, Marvel announced the addition of Daniel Bruhl to the cast and described the actor as someone who is "set to rock the Marvel Cinematic Universe."

"With Daniel's ability to deliver intense, nuanced performances, we knew we had found yet another great actor to share the screen with some of our biggest heroes," said Producer Kevin Feige in the statement.

The 36-year-old, who has "Rush" and "Inglourious Basterds" films under his belt, has been tapped by the studio to bring a "Captain America 3" villain to life.

The site continued to describe the actor as: "The celebrated actor earned Golden Globe, SAG, BAFTA and Critics' Choice nominations for his role as Niki Lauda in director Ron Howard's 'Rush.' In addition to Howard, Bruhl has also worked with other esteemed directors such as Quentin Tarantino, Paul Greengrass, Anton Corbijn, and Michael Winterbottom."

There is no word on the exact role that the German actor will be tackling but Collider recalls how "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" directors Joe and Anthony Russo explained that the sequel, subtitled "Civil War" will be a continuation of the second installment's storyline.

Relatedly, Variety claims that per its sources, Bruhl will not be the film's main villain but "could potentially be the top menace in Marvel's Dr. Strange."

This is a deviation from the original "Civil War" comics, noted The Hollywood Reporter, because the series "features pits Captain America and Iron Man against each other without a villain behind it all."

Having Downey in a co-starring role opposite Evans emphasizes the possibility that Marvel may be looking at a more antagonistic relationship between Tony Stark and Steve Rogers, analyzed Collider.

With Marvel studio's penchant for deviations from the original comic book storyline, the site noted that if the Captain and Iron Man to go head-to-head, they will probably be putting a twist in the story.

The release further shared that Bruhl will be joining the cast of Chris Evans (in the title role), along with Robert Downey, Jr. Playing Tony Star/ Iron Man as well as recently announced Chadwick Boseman, who will be debuting as the Black Panther.

Other big-ticket celebrities set to return include Sebastian Stan, Samuel L. Jackson, and Scarlett Johansson.

In order to ensure franchise consistency, Deadline reported, via IGN, that it's highly like that "the directing duo will likely take over the

Avengers: Infinity War sequels after Joss Whedon completes his run with Age of Ultron."

Look for "Captain America: Civil War" when it hits theaters May 6, 2016.
