Christopher Algieri has vowed to shutout former pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiaio in every round in their upcoming WBO Welterweight championship bout on November 22 at Venetian Macao in Macau, China.
Algieri, who will have the fight of his career against Pacquiao, believed he has an edge over his opponent in terms of getting ahead of schedule and working hard every day at the gym.
"They're seeing a much more rested guy, a guy who's coming into training sessions hungry to learn and get better, and my coaches are saying it every day, I'm ahead of schedule," Algieri said in an interview with Fight Hype.
"We are ahead of where we wanted to be...as you can see, they're concerned about something related to me. We're not taking that approach. I'm going to go out there and I'm going to be me and I'm going to set the tone."
Boasting an impressive 20-0 record with 8 knockouts in his career, Algieri stressed that he's not looking for a close contest with the Pacman, but instead he's planning to dominate the eight-division world champion right from the opening bell.
"I'm going to go out there and I'm looking to win every single round. I don't want any close fights. I don't prepare for that," said Algieri, who is coming off a 12-round split decision win over Ruslan Provodnikov last June.
Algieri, who is considered one of the best technicians in the sport today, thinks his best asset going to his match against Pacquiao, as Freddie Roach noticed, was not his jab but his ability to adjust in any circumstance.
"My ability to adjust and find a way to win, which is an intangible, I know. A lot of people, like you said and Freddie said, think about the jab and whatnot. I don't think that's my best asset. I think my best asset is being able to adjust in a fight; adjusting to any situation and finding a way to win," Algieri added.
Viewed by many experts as a heavy underdog, Algieri is looking to shock the world by beating one of the most decorated boxers in this generation. Pacquiao, who reclaimed the WBO welterweight title with a unanimous decision win over Timothy Bradley, is already preparing for his second fight of the year, but his dedication in training has been questions by several boxing pundits because of other activities like assuming a role as a playing coach for a professional basketball team, KIA Sorento, in the Philippines.
