Amazon.com Inc., the Seattle-based e-commerce and retailing giant, may have found its office space in New York City. It may be leasing some prime space at the 1133 Avenue of the Americas building at West 44th Street.
Citing insider sources, the New York Post is reporting that Amazon is in negotiations with the Durst Organization, owner of the office building and is planning to take up the 285,872 square-feet space on the second through 10th floor, which will soon be vacated by the Internal revenue Services.
The gigantic office space could easily accommodate Amazon's office needs, which is currently bursting at the seams at its 92,492-square-feet space in the nearby 1350 Avenue of the Americas building.
Amazon started office-space hunting in the Big Apple May, last year. It sent out requests to landlords and owners in Manhattan and parts of East River and Brooklyn for proposals of any available office space. The company was also considering space in the upcoming "One World Trade Center building."
However, the details of a lease haven't been confirmed yet.
In 2013, Gawker reported that Amazon was looking to expand its office footprint buying up space at the Williamsburg waterfront project. At that time, a source told the website:
"They got the money and space size that they could snap up one of the warehouses that JUST SIT THERE waiting for 30 year leases and someone to foot the bill on renovation. If that's the case, it'd be pretty quiet."
The Building
The building at 1133 Ave. of the Americas is a 45-storey commercial skyscraper that spans an area of 1,101,300 square feet. Boasting of a limestone and glass façade, the building recently underwent a $10 million enhancement program and has been installed with several green features.
If Amazon does lease the space in the building, it will join the major tenants of the building that include Bank of America, ACE Insurance and Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler.
According to the building's official website, lessee of the available space will have access to:
- Distinctive presence as an anchor tenant on the exterior of the building as well as in the lobby;
- Approximately 13,000 square feet of exclusive outdoor landscaped terraces with views of Bryant Park on the 2nd Floor setback
- An option to create a private entrance with a generous plaza area on 44th Street.
Amazon is the largest office space holder in Seattle. It recently added 270,000 square feet to its existing vast kitty after buying a 7-story building from the Children's Research Institute in the Denny Triangle, Seattle.
