'PokéMon Super Mystery Dungeon' Review: Poor Narrative but Offers Increased Difficulty and Challenging Gameplay?

"Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon" has already been released for Nintendo 3DS for the North America market. Those who are not familiar of this recent entry of the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series can check out the promo video of the game.

Siliconera says that those who want to learn how to play the "Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon" can go over the footage that is released by TiLMENDOMiNATiON. This 110 minutes video gives you pure game play of the Pokémon game. As Siliconera says, "it gives us a good look at the first few areas and dungeons that players will explore early on in the game, as well as a few of the many different types of Pokémon they will befriend."

For those who are already playing the "Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon," the video game has been challenging fans despite its simplistic gameplay. The Daily Texan says this "spin-off adds a strategy element to the standard turn-based combat of the mainline Pokémon games."

It is noted in the "Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon" has a narrative structure similar to the 6th entry of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series. But what makes it different from the previous game is that the 7th entry has new cast of playable characters.

Another thing that has been observed with "Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon" is its lengthy introduction and tutorial. The player spends something listening to the narrative and tutorial before the player could finally control the game and the actions.

A welcome improvement of the game is the control B button which allows the player to speed through the dialogue. It has been a pain in the neck whenever the player goes through the "crawling portions of the game," due to poor narrative and slow moving text.

Although "Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon" has the same pattern of narrative from the previous Pokémon games, still it stands out because of its gameplay. It has been noted that the 7th entry did some tweaking and has various additions to its formula. Thus the new game appears really roguelike.

"Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon" puts up fairly crucial "challenge to players by requiring players to face more challenging enemies and employ intricate tactics in combat, something that was lacking in previous entries." However, the Pokémon game still doesn't provide "the challenge that dungeon crawlers are known for." Overall, the game doesn't appear repetitive compared to the previous entries, Thanks to the added level difficulty.
