Sony Backwards Compatibility: PS2 Games to Be Playable on PS4? See List of Games Rumored to be Included

PlayStation 4 gamers have something to cheer about as reports claim that PlayStation 2 games can now be played on the PS4 console via the company's backwards compatibility. The Pan European Game Information Council (PEGI) has unveiled a list of PlayStation 2 games that will be playable in the current-gen console, a report from International Business Times said on Thursday.

PEGI council listed "Ape Escape 2," "Twisted Metal: Black" and "Dark Cloud 2" as the games included in the new feature. It was, however, emphasized that the listed games will be released for a digital-only distribution. It can be recalled that "Twisted Metal: Black" was ported earlier to PlayStation 3 on Sept. 2012. However, it is unclear as of this writing if Sony has actually confirmed the report.

"I totally understand people asking for it. If it was easy, we would have done that! But our focus is creating PS4 games and adding new services," said Shuhei Yoshida, Sony's president of worldwide studios, when asked about backwards compatibility, according to Tech Times.

Yoshida then continued about the company's focus on remaking games. "Remaking games on PS4 makes the games even better, with 'The Last of Us. You can play at 60 frames per second. The same goes for 'Dark Souls 2.' Actually, I just finished 'Dark Souls 2' again on PS4," he added.

What is clear right now is that Sony is focusing all its resources on developing an HD remake of its games stretching from the last generation. The company is also busy promoting the PlayStation Now.

The reported backwards compatibility feature of Sony is said to be intended to rival Microsoft's Xbox backward compatibility. According to Mike Ybarra, Microsoft's Xbox's director of program management, Microsoft is close to its target date to launch backwards compatibility for Xbox One, after the company releases the console's new Windows 10 in November.

"At launch, you will be able to play over 100 Xbox 360 games on Xbox One with hundreds more in the months to come. This includes the added benefit of Xbox One feature including screenshots, streaming, and game DVR - for your favorite Xbox 360 games," Ybarra said,  according to Xbox News.
