Tips & Hacks For A 100x Smoother House Move

No matter how much you deny it, your upcoming house move will be dreadful. Good news is, you can make the whole process less painful by applying clever and easy tips for a faster and easier move.

Here are some tips and hacks for a 100x smoother house move by Apartment Therapy:

  • Avoid wasting time running your finger around a packing tape just to find its tip. A quick and easy solution is to use a toothpick or a safety pin to mark the end of the tape so you can quickly get to sealing and packing.
  • If you have loose screws or hardware for certain furniture, make sure to place them in marked sealable bags and place them in their corresponding box or tape them to the furniture that they belong to.
  • Instead of taking your things out of drawers, you can just cover each one with plastic wrap so you can move them as is without the need to unpack, repack, and organize them back in.
  • When packing fragile things such as those made of glass, you can use socks (for smaller items) or other type of linen (for bigger items) instead of spending on bubble wrap or using newspaper that won't provide much protection and safety.
  • Avoid spilling things during transit such as salt shakers, half-used shampoo or anything else in danger of leaking. What you can do is seal the mouth of the container with plastic wrap before you put their screw tops back on.
  • Save time not having to guess which cord goes to which equipment. Before unplugging and packing up all electronics, do not forget to label your cords even with just duct tape or masking tape and a pen to write which equipment the cord belongs to.
  • For things like television, take a photo of the back part (where the cord attachments are) so you would know how to plug them back on once you install it in your new home.
  • For heavy objects such as books, it is best to pack them in suitcases with wheels so nobody has to do the heavy lifting.
  • For sharp objects such as knives, pack them in padded potholders so nobody accidentally cuts themselves in the process of moving.
