‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 6 Finale Spoilers: Elena Gilbert Died Before Taking the Cure?

"The Vampire Diaries" Season 6 finale episode promo seemed to have hinted on a very emotional ending for the people of Mystic Falls. It looked like one of the show's major characters may have said goodbye - for good.

As seen in the promo video clip, the words, "Say goodbye before it is too late," were sprawled across the screen. The montage started at the scene where everything first started, with Elena Gilbert, played by Nina Dobrev, was first introduced. The clip then proceeds to pass through her journey since Season 1 - from writing in her diary to falling for Stefan Salvatore to falling for the second brother, Damon Salvatore, played by Ian Somerhalder.

The clip also showed a scene where she was hugging and crying with her friends, Kat Graham as Bonnie, Candice Accola as Caroline, Michael Trevino as Tyler, and Steven McQueen as Jeremy.

When the montage ended, the real-time scene showed Elena lying on the ground at the church, with a clearly heartbroken Damon kissing her on her forehead, according to Hollywood Life. Her friends were standing over them, looking absolutely terrified. As this scene commences, Elena is heard in the background saying, "There is nothing more I could ever want than for it to last forever - but, it can't."

It must be noted that in the previous episode, Elena was critically hurt during the wedding of Jo and Alaric when Kai showed up to kill Jo. This incident happened shortly after Damon revealed to Elena that he was going to take the back-to-human cure, so he can spend his life with her.

It certainly looks like Julie Plec will be giving "The Vampire Diaries" fans a lot to cry about when the finale episode of Season 6 finally hits the small screen. After all, she did reveal to Entertainment Weekly that she was going to put all of the show's character's lives at risk.

"You can call it whatever you want," said Plec. "But, it goes back to the Moldavian Massacre of 'Dynasty' back in the '80s when you just end your season with everyone's life completely in the balance. One hundred ways to die on 'The Vampire Diaries' - this year, that was the plan - to end with such a ridiculous and horrific cliffhanger and really not tell the audience who would return and who would not until the very end."

Although the Season 6 finale episode will bring out some tears from the audience, Graham confirmed that it will not merely be a boring cry fest for Elena. She previously teased in International Business Times that there will be "an epic battle."
