'Terminator 5: Genisys' Update & Release Date: New Poster Reveal Film's Lead As John Connor?

When it was announced that the cyborg film, "Terminator," is getting a sort of reboot in the face of "Terminator: Genisys," fans of the franchise had mixed reactions on what to expect. Now, it seems that the twist in the upcoming movie has been revealed in a new promotional poster that the studio released for the movie.

The poster from Paramount Pictures showed all relevant cast members such as Jai Courtney, Emilia Clarke, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Jason Clarke. While it was typically expected of a promotional poster to show all major characters in it, what was intriguing was how Clarke's character, John Connor, was portrayed, said Cinema Blend.

In the middle of the poster was Connor standing in fire, revealed to be a metallic robot of some sort.

While the twist was unexpected, it led to speculations that Connor could be the movie's lead character this time.

In an interview with Screen Rant in early April, Clarke revealed more details about his character and how Connor fits in this new movie.

"All I can say (is) you guys don't want to know too much. John is at the heart of what this conundrum is. Anytime, you've gone beyond, say, the apocalypse we know that is always hanging over us, there is a battle for who is going to run the shop. Where do we want technology to do? What is it going to be? And what are we giving over?" said the Australian actor.

He added, "I truly do say that John is psychologically at the heart of that. It's what makes it a role that freaks me out each day."

If Connor does take the lead in this film, which was so openly hinted in its recent teaser poster, then it could also mean that there are more twists to be expected.

"Doctor Who" actor Matt Smith has been confirmed to be part of the film and yet not a hint of his character was shown in the two trailers released.

According to some speculations, Smith's character would prove to be the bigger twist in the film. He is rumored to be the advance T-5000 Terminator "that can brainwash humans" and would be seen in the other sequels planned for this film, said Venture Capital Post.

Smith and the studio have yet to comment on this report.

"Terminator: Genisys" would hit theaters on July 1, 2015.
