‘Sherlock’ Season 4 Plot & Air Date: 2016 Episodes To Be 'Bloody Frightening' After 'Shocking' Christmas Special

Fans of the Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman duo from the show "Sherlock" might need to wait for a long time as the upcoming fourth season of the BBC miniseries is set to air in 2016. However, it seems that the producers of the show are determined to make the wait worth it as reports surfaced that the upcoming season would be far more exciting and scary than the previous ones.

It has been a long wait for the followers of the hit series. The last season aired in 2014 and the upcoming three episodes would come out in 2016, with no specific date yet.

Steven Moffat, the BBC showrunner of the popular miniseries, hinted in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly that while the fourth season has not even been written yet, it would talk about "consequences" sure to excite fans in a way that would make them "desperate for Season 5."

"The first series was all about the beginning of their friendship. Second about the formative stages, the love and fear and loss and all that. The third was good days, me and my pal and my pal's wife. Those are golden days. The missing element in a lot of Sherlock Holmes adaptations is allowing it to be funny," said Moffat.

He added, "There's a lot of humor in Sherlock Holmes, and it's ignored in a lot of adaptations. Season 4 is going to be... I suppose you'd say consequences. It's consequences. Chickens come to roost. It's dark in some ways - obviously it's great fun and a Sherlock Holmes romp and all that - but there's a sense of things coming back to bite you."

Moffat noted that the next episodes would be "hilarious and exhilarating some days, but some days it's going to be bloody frightening."

It remains unclear what the "consequences" for the characters are but Screen Rant pointed out that Holmes and Watson's former lives as ex-hired killer and war hero could very well play into that storyline.

Another angle could be the effects of their detective work that introduced new adversaries who might be looking for revenge.

To tide fans over with the long wait, the producers are coming out with a Christmas special episode of "Sherlock" to air on December 25, 2015. The special episode would be set in Victorian London and is an entirely different story from the series.

A previous report in Realty Today quoted Moffat, "It's far too early to say what's coming, but we're reasonably confident that the very next thing to happen to Sherlock and John is the very last thing you'd expect."
