With the recent confirmation of "Doctor Strange" and its lead actor, Benedict Cumberbatch, the superhero flick has fast become one of the most anticipated films to date.
Now that the main character has been identified, the world now wonders who will share the silver screen with the "Sherlock" actor.
According to Latino Review, Morgan Freeman is on the short list to play the role of "The Ancient One." For those that aren't aware, the character is Doctor Strange's mentor.
Aside from Freeman, 77, other actors reportedly in the running include Bill Nighy as well as Ken Watanabe.
One advantage Freeman has going into this role, if it is true, is that the talented actor is no stranger to superhero flicks. The "Lucy" star took on the role of Lucius Fox in "The Dark Knight" series that stared Christian Bale.
IGN does note that if Freeman is being eyed for the role, the character's race and origin isn't a main focus. The site shares that The Ancient One has traditionally had Asian heritage having been born in Tibet. This may indicate that Marvel is looking to switch things up and move away from some of its traditional storylines.
For those that aren't comic book heads, The Ancient One use to be the actual Sorcerer Supreme and served as the mentor of Strange, who eventually becomes the Sorcerer.
However, Strange is not the only powerful being that has been guided by The Ancient One. Games Radar recalled how the character served as a mentor to villain Baron Karl Mordo, who is rumored to appear in "Doctor Strange" as an enemy.
There is no word on the extent of The Ancient One's role in the film but seeing as how he is an instrumental character in the lives of both the lead character and rumored villain, whoever will play the role may be taking on a hefty role in the movie.
"Doctor Strange" is being directed by Scott Derrickson with a screenplay by Jon Spaihts ("Prometheus").
To date, there is no word when production for the film will begin. "Doctor Strange" is due out in theaters Nov. 4, 2016.
