How to Pick the Right Lighting for Your Kitchen

Using the right kind of light for your kitchen is very important in making the space look appealing, stylish, and functional.

Randall Whitehead, a lighting designer in San Francisco and author of "Residential Lighting: A Practical Guide," claims that the most effective lighting for the kitchen must fulfill the following elements: accent, task, ambient, and decorative lighting.

"The most common mistake people make is trying to light their entire kitchen with one fixture centered in the ceiling," Randall said, HGTV reports. "It ends up being what I call a 'glare bomb,' visually overpowering everything in the space, including family and friends."

Natural lighting

Natural light is one of the best kinds of light that you can have in your kitchen. It is important to figure out what part of the kitchen offers natural light and which part is too dark to prepare or cook food. The right amount of light is very important when working in the kitchen as it avoids accidents and makes work faster and lighter. If there's an area in your kitchen that needs lighting during daytime, have a light overhead or task lighting, Zillow recommends.

Ambient lighting

Ambient lighting is appropriate for the gourmet area if you want to boost its look. This kind of light can be fixed over or under the cabinet or wall sconces. You can also have small lights or rope lights that offer a sophisticated soft glow during nighttime.

Task lighting

Does your kitchen seem too dark tor you? A task lighting is the answer for this kind of problem. From the keyword "task," this kind of lighting aids the homeowner in their kitchen tasks with the help of an overhead light. An example of this is a pendant light over the sink, over a kitchen bar or an eat-in kitchen table.

Overhead lighting

Overhead lighting can be can lights that can brighten the whole kitchen. It can also be a decorative chandelier, LEDs or CFLs instead of regular filament bulbs.
