What Families Ask for in a Pet-Friendly Home Design

Gone are the days when pet owners would only have a leash, a collar and a bowl for their pets. Now, a lot of designs have been made to provide comfort, like the electronic feeders, special showers, designer accessories, flat-screen TVs, tubs, and even a fancy room.

Standard Pacific, a builder from Irvine, California, provided a design for pet rooms in a community in California. From then on, the company continued to offer other amenities for pets in 27 communities, such as drinking fountains, dog parks, wash areas, exercise stations, and picnic areas for pets.

Stacy Johnstun and Blaine Raddon, a couple from Utah, made sure that their home would have enough space for their dog pet, Blu. In their property, an underground electronic fence was made for Blu and a spot was provided for him to play in. A feeding table was also installed where the Great Dane's accessories and food are kept. There's also an electronic pet door that opens to the magnetic key on its collar.

For the cat owners, on the other hand, the little boxes that may be concealed with a cabinet-like design that is made under the countertop are important. According to Jennifer Gilmer, a designer from Bethesda, Maryland, they get requests mostly for areas to store water bowls and food. To address this concern, they offer a slide-out type of drawer in a cabinet containing the dishes. Another frequent request is for mud rooms where the dog washes can be placed frequently.

A few months following Johnstun, Raddon and Blu's moving into their new house, the couple noted how their pet Blu was able to settle in quite faster that they did. It only took Blu a day to understand the fence and the pet door. Now, the pet feels like the king of his own castle, Idaho Statesman reported.
