Cyber Monday 2014: Apple Stores Get (RED) Makeover

In honor of World AIDS Day, Apple Inc turns red to launch one of its biggest fundraising projects to fight the dreaded killer pandemic.

Apple changed the color of its famous logo to the color red and will take effect worldwide on Dec.1, the official date of World AIDS Day.

The move is in line with Apple's partnership with (RED), an advocacy organization established to combat AIDS.

According to the New York Daily News, Apple's Sydney store was the first to change the logo's color. Other Apple stores in countries such as China, Hong Kong, Europe, Japan and the U.S. will follow suit depending on each country's time zones.

Apple's partnership with (RED) does not start and end with changing the company logo. It will also help (RED) in its fundraising efforts. Apple will host a special section on its App Store and (RED) will sponsor 25 mobile applications, the proceeds of which will go to The Global Fund, an international financing organization that fights AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis among other things.

The Daily News also said that a percentage of Apple's Cyber Monday sales, be it online or retail, will go straight to the international organization. However, the report did not specify the sales percentage.

According to AppAdvice.com, the Apple products under (RED)'s merchandise include virtually all of Apple's products. Consumers can get (RED) versions of iPod nano, iPod shuffle, iPod touch, iPad mini smart case, iPad Air smart case, iPad mini smart cover, iPhone 4S bumper, iPad Air smart cover and iPhone 5s case. The hosting of these products began last Nov. 24 and will end on Sunday, Dec. 7.

Apple Inc. CEO Tim Cook took pride with the company's effort to help spread understanding about the AIDS pandemic and the fight against it.

On the company's website, Cook said in a press release that helping AIDS victims extend their lives is the most important gift any person can give.

“For eight years, our customers have been helping fight AIDS in Africa by funding life-saving treatments which are having a profoundly positive impact," Cook said in the press release. "This year we are launching our biggest fundraising push yet with the participation of Apple’s retail and online stores, and some of the brightest minds in the App Store are lending their talents to the effort as well.”
