Home and Furniture 101: How to Care for Your Sofa and Increase Its Longevity

Just like your favorite food, your furniture at home also has certain expiration dates. However, your furniture's longevity may be shortened if you do not know how to care for it properly. Here are some ways on how you can take care of your sofa and let it reach its maximum lifespan.

According to About Home, the lifespan of your favorite sofa depends on a number of factors. While the estimated longevity of sofas usually depend on the cost and quality, how you treat it may shorten or lengthen its lifespan.

Low- to mid-priced sofas reportedly last about 10 years while high-end sofas can live for up to 25 years or more. However, some people do not realize that caring for their sofas require more than just frequent cleaning.

The publication noted that in order for a sofa to last long enough, you need to change your spots every so often to distribute the weight evenly. While you may love sitting at a certain spot, this may actually cause wear and tear on one side.

Rotating the cushions is also a must do if you want to see your sofa for the next 10 to 25 years. According to Sofa Workshop, aside from rotating the cushions, it is also important to given them a good plumping every now and then.

To plump the cushion, simply remove it from the sofa and punch it from all sides. Plumping the cushion will help keep its shape. Sofas with feather fillings require turning and plumping every single day.

Fiber-filled sofas do not require daily turning and plumping, but they must be done regularly. Sofas filled with foam, on the other hand, are low maintenance, as they do not require regular plumping and turning.

Cleaning your sofas should be done weekly, as dust and other kinds of dirt can immediately pile up even without you noticing it. Brush the sofa weekly and vacuum it under a low setting for at least once a month.
