On the other hand, Investopedia says you can actually reside in China for only $1,000 a month. Here's how:
A place to stay
Since you are eyeing for a cheaper cost of living, forget about the city. Instead, look for an outlying area of China's downtown. According to Numbeo, a one-bedroom apartment near the downtown area costs $350 plus, almost $300 lesser than the $650 in a downtown area. If you have a partner or a roommate, there's a three-bedroom condo that costs about $680. Such price is reasonable for a $1,000 monthly budget.
Chinese food
If you want to eat without having to pay too much, you are in the right country. Chinese cities have a lot of inexpensive food options. You can buy a loaf of bread for less than $1.50, $1.90 for a dozen of eggs, 50 cents or less per pound of rice, and chicken breast, skinless or boneless, costs $1.90 per pound. Investopedia relates that most of the expatriates who only cook at home can only spend $200 or even less per month, and the good thing is, they can already eat well with that budget of food. But, eating at fast food restaurants won't cost you much as well as you only have to spend $4-$5. And by the way, you can't be a vegetarian in China as what Thought Catalog shares. Expect everything is fried in pig fat, unless you have more time to cook your own.
Other expenses
There's also nothing to worry about spending for your other personal needs. Household cleaning products are also cheap in China. You can actually allot a $50 budget for your hygiene needs including detergents. Just don't overspend on clothing and cosmetics as they are relatively expensive in China.
