William Randolph Hearst NYC apartment hits market for $38 million

A co-op triplex penthouse unit once owned by William Randolph Hearst, the publishing magnate that revolutionized American media, located atop the Clarendon Building at the southeast corner of 86th Street has hit the listing market for $38 million.

According to The Wall Street Journal, after the landlord refused to grant Hearst more space to expand an apartment in the building in 1913, he purchased the whole tower and converted the place into a five-story apartment, making it the largest residence in the city - ever.

The triple-story penthouse is a celebrity in itself, with several scenes of the classic movie "Citizen Kane" shot there.

The residence now has a total of 17 rooms, including seven bedrooms and six full and one half bathrooms totaling 7,000 square feet. Interiors of the home feature hardwood and tiled flooring with soaring ceilings and large glass windows offering ample views of the Hudson River and the city's skyline.

The first level of the three-story penthouse has a great room, a family room, a library, the master bedroom and another guest suite, the living room, a kitchen and a gallery. A classic wooden staircase leads to the second floor, which has three bedrooms. On the third level is a gallery and solarium. Each of the floors is flanked by open terraces that provide ample lounging space.

The listing describes the home as "unique in possessing an incomparable historical and artistic provenance, one that can never be duplicated. It is truly a penthouse for the ages."

Paula Del Nunzio of Brown Harris Stevens holds the listing. See the photos and floor plans of the home here.

Hearst owned several mansions in and around the country, including the Hearst Castle in San Simeon and the Beverly House in Beverly Hills. Check out some of his most magnificent properties here.

Lady Gaga is reportedly shooting a music video in his San Simeon castle and, according to 411Mania.com, is donating $250,000 to the Hearst Castle Foundation.
