‘Mr. Robot’ Breakout Star Rami Malek Gets First Lead Role in a Movie

Rami Malek, the lead star of one of the breakout television series of the year "Mr. Robot," has been announced as the lead actor for "Buster's Mal Heart."

The hacker series "Mr. Robot" is this year's biggest surprise as far as primetime TV is concerned and its lead star Malek has been catapulted to stardom. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Malek will be headlining the cast of an indie film by Sarah Adina Smith called "Buster's Mal Heart." He will be joined by Kate Lyn Sheil of "House of Cards," DJ Qualls of "The Man in High Castle" and "Halt and Catch Fire's" Toby Huss. The movie is produced by Gamechanger Films.

"Buster's Mal Heart" is a mystery film about a reclusive mountain man played by Malek. He is on the run and hiding from the police; he survives the harsh winter by moving from one vacation home to another, breaking in and finding whatever food and supplies he can get his hands on. He has this dream that he is lost out at sea and it keeps coming back to him each time he tries to sleep. Finally, he discovers that what is haunting him in his dreams actually happened and that he is actually one person trapped inside two human bodies.

Writer and director Smith has won several accolades for her first movie "The Midnight Swim" that was declared the AFI Fest Audience Award Winner. It also won in the Nashville Film Festival, Sun Valley Film Festival, and Starz! Denver Festival; the film took home the top prize in all contests. She is also the lone female director chosen to join the making of "Holidays," a horror anthology headed by Kevin Smith.

While it is his first lead role in a major motion picture, Malek is no stranger to the big screen. He had roles in "Need for Speed" and "Night at the Museum."
