Moving can be a pain, especially if the movers charge you per pound. Unless you don't have a problem with an expensive move, then you need to carefully assess your possessions and decide which ones have to be packed, left behind, or give away to charity, or pass to a friend.

Books
If you have a mini library, then this should be one of the toughest decisions during your move. What do you do with those hard covers, textbooks, and coffee table picture books when your move is based on weight? While it's not easy, you need to step a foot and give yourself a limit; maybe, two medium-sized boxes? Anything that doesn't fit either has to be given away, sold to a bookstore, or donated.
Kitchen stuff you don't use
How many of your kitchen appliances are still in the box and were never used? This is probably because you only need one or two appliances that work as an all-in-one. Lighten your load in your move by leaving those never been used items behind. Give them to friends (as long as they are in perfect working condition) or donate them to charity. The goal is to no longer have them add up to your moving load.
Furniture you've never liked
Don't keep pieces of furniture just because of the length of time that you have had them. Instead, consider there functionality and condition. If you are thinking of keeping them so you don't need to get new ones, think of how much it will cost you during the move if your move is calculated by weight. Maybe you can use the money you save to get newer pieces.
Sports equipment you don't use
When was the last time you got yourself to jump on that treadmill? How many times do you get to use the bike, the skis and the camping equipment? If you have just been moving those things from one place to another only to keep them in the storage, then it's about time that you spare them from your upcoming move.
Tools and garden supplies you don't need
How many tools and gardening supplies do you need? Reassess what you have and get rid of those that you rarely use or can be substituted by an equipment that you will be taking with you in your move. Those tools are heavy and difficult to pack; so save yourself the hassle and the cost by only bringing with you the ones you will actually use most of the time.
