Australian feminist Germaine Greer is facing a petition demanding her not to speak at the Cardiff University following the comments she made about Caitlyn Jenner and the transgender community.
The Australian writer and activist has allegedly accused former Olympian, Caitlyn Jenner, of wanting to take the spotlight away from the female Kardashians, according to Mirror. Furthermore, she stands by her judgment that trans women are not "real women."
Greer came under fire after she was interviewed by BBC2's "Newsnight" in which she was asked about her opinion on Glamour magazine's move to hail Jenner "Woman of the Year." She reportedly accused the magazine of misogyny explaining, "that a man who goes to these lengths to become a woman will be a better woman than someone who is just born a woman."
She also added, "It seems to me that what was going on there was that he/she wanted the limelight that the other, female, members of the family were enjoying and has conquered it, just like that."
According to BuzzFeed, the petition was spearheaded by Rachel Melhuish, women's officer at Cardiff student's union, citing that Greer's speech could turn out dangerous. The petition that hopes to convince Cardiff University to cancel Greer's speech wrote, "While debate in a University should be encouraged, hosting a speaker with such problematic and hateful views towards marginalized and vulnerable groups is dangerous. Allowing Greer a platform endorses her views, and by extension, the transmisogyny, which she continues to perpetuate."
The petition has already earned 2,100 of its needed 2,500 signatures.
According to the Guardian, Greer has expressed her views about the petition. The author of "The Female Eunuch" said, "I don't really know what I think of it. It strikes me as a bit of a put-up job really because I am not even going to talk about the issue that they are on about."
She added, "What they are saying is that because I don't think surgery will turn a man into a woman I should not be allowed to speak anywhere."
