'Health' News: Sitting for Long Hours for Work Could Kill You

Sitting while working for your desk job may be the reason of your death due to kidney failure, studies show.

A new study shows that sitting for long hours every day could be the cause of kidney disease. Moreover, people with inactive lifestyle have already been found to be more likely to die of cardiovascular diseases, have a higher risk of cancer and 90% chance to develop type 2 diabetes.

The result of the new study which will be presented at a meeting of the American Society of Nephrology from November 3 to 8, found that the likelihood of developing chronic kidney disease rose by 20 percent for every additional 80 minutes a person spent sitting per day (compared to the mean).

5,873 adults from variety of health backgrounds were looked at in the course of the study. It also assumed the average person is awake for 16 hours a day. What's more interesting and alarming is the fact that even if the person added a moderate to vigorous exercise to their day, the increase in risk still persisted. Their risk for kidney disease still rose, as long as they were sitting for a substantial amount of time.

"Sedentary behavior, which is not mere lack of moderate/vigorous physical activity, is likely an independent risk factor for chronic kidney disease," Srini Beddhu, a doctor at the University of Utah School of Medicine and an author on the study said in a statement.

According to Dr. Beddhu as posted in Newsweek, it still remains a question as to whether sitting also changes how chronic kidney disease progresses, and whether or not sitting can actually contribute to the disease developing into a more severe form of the illness known as "end stage renal disease."

"Hence, interventions targeting sedentary behavior to slow the progression of chronic kidney disease need to be conducted," he added.

Does your work require sitting for long hours, too? What are your thoughts?
