A Cupboard beneath a Staircase is for Rent for $750 a Month in London

Edith Hancock wrote in an article for City A.M. that, "London's house prices can seem a bit crazy at times." She identifies one house hunter who thought he had found a new low. This rental is in the Clapham neighborhood and has recently gained notoriety because of its asking price of $750 a month. Hancock relates that the current tenants of the said place were clever in mentioning that the place for rent was fully furnished, with the words "room" and "bed" arguably speaking of the truth.

The home hunter referred to is Alex Lomax, who was shown a single mattress tucked inside a cupboard under the stairs. His post on Twitter, wherein he compared the room to that of Harry Potter's infamous place in Privet Drive while he was staying with his mean and abusive aunt and uncle, has been re-tweeted more than 2,400 times already.

"I have literally just been shown a bed under the stairs for £500 a month. F you London! #nothanks #privetdrive!? pic.twitter.com/Rj73NUwz9S - Alex Lomax (@alex_lomax) Sept. 30, 2015"

New York Post, through Hana Alberts, further describes that the "apartment shown to Lomax was a very small bedroom in a shared house, which could accommodate only a slender mattress on the floor, clothes hanging of the wall and other belongings kept under the pillow." What's even worse, the claustrophobic space is under a staircase.

The Real Deal's Christopher Cameron also shares that the listing on London2Let.com acknowledges its small size, but does not get into the fact that it is a literal closet. According to him, it also appears that the images showing the space had been removed.

"We are looking for a friendly, open-minded and outgoing person to join our house share in a great period house in Clapham," said the listing.

In an interview with Mashable, Lomax commented, "I left as quickly as I could and said it wasn't right for me. Annoyed at myself, to be honest, as it's disgusting [the real estate agent] thought that'd be OK."
