A new low-income housing opened up in Ellsworth, Maine called Straw Way Housing on Friday which will aid the 59 percent of local families that are unable to afford a two bedroom home in today's housing market.
The complex was developed by Penquis Housing with funding from USDA Rural Development and other companies. With the help of subsidies, low-income families get to call this new development home, according to NBC affiliate, WCSH6 news.
The complex has 29 units, including two bedrooms, three bedrooms, and even handicap accessible apartments. Rent is 30 percent of whatever the household income is, which offers residents some peace of mind.
The public was invited to browse through some of the 29 apartments available, including both two and three bedroom units. Those apartments are available to families who either receive a low or very low income.
The limits for very low income are 1 person: $22,400, 2 people: $25,600, 3 people: $28,800, 4 people: $31,950, 5 people: $34,550, 6 people: $37,100. The limits for low income are 1 person: $26,880, 2 people: $30,720, 3 people: $34,560, 4 people: $38,340, 5 people: $41,460, 6 people: $44,520.
Executive Director of the Housing Foundation, Duska Hayman, said "We try to make very strong placements, so that when the folks are living here, they're able to live side by side, get along with each other and build a community."
