J.K. Rowling’s ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ Update and Rumors: Who’s The Cursed Child? Play To Be Staged In Two Parts

J.K. Rowling on Friday announced that the play "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" will be staged in two parts.

The author of the best-selling "Harry Potter" series posted on Twitter on Sept. 25, "Due to the epic nature of the story we've been working on, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will be in two parts!"

The stage play is written by Jack Thorne based on the new Harry Potter story he co-wrote with director John Tiffany, and of course J.K. Rowling.

According to Pottermore, Thorne is thrilled with the decision because it gives him more opportunity to explore the wizarding world of Harry Potter. He said, "Obviously I loved it when we decided to tell this story in two parts because I got to spend more time with the characters and what an honour that has been."

"It continues to be unbelievable and amazing that I've been given this extraordinary chance to bring Harry Potter to the stage. As a fan, who just devoured the books and the films, this couldn't be more exciting for me," the play writer added.

Tiffany is just as excited because he believes it is a unique production. He told Pottermore, "I've never worked on anything quite like this before. Usually in theatre you're adapting existing material or creating an entirely new play. With the Cursed Child we have been given the unique opportunity to explore some of the most cherished books and beloved characters ever written, yet work with J.K. Rowling to tell a story from that world that no one yet knows - it's exhilarating."

The director further said, "It shares a scale and ambition with all the Harry Potter stories so in order to do this justice we have decided to present the play in two parts."

When the play was announced in 2013, London and New York producers Colin Callender and Sonia Friedman said the theater production would tell "the previously untold story of Harry Potter's early years as an orphan and outcast." As to who might be the cursed child remains a secret, but fans have tons of theories. Tech Insider looked at them.

One guess is that the cursed child is Harry's cousin, Dudley Dursley. Fans on MuggleNet said, "Dudley doesn't have much to do with Harry before Voldemort's attack on James and Lily, but once Harry shows up on his doorstep, he does lead a sort of cursed life in his own ridiculously spoiled way."

It could also be Neville Longbottom who could've become "The Chosen One" in the books having similar characteristics and family background with Harry.

And, it might sound redundant, but the cursed child could be none other than Harry Potter himself because of Callender and Friedman's statement on what story is about.

"Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" is expected to premiere in summer 2016.
