How High Are Property Taxes in Your State?

Property taxes are dues that property owners are required to pay. The tax is levied by the governing body of the area where the property is situated. These taxes can be paid to the national government, the state, a county, a region, or a municipality, and multiple bodies may require to tax the same property. In the US, property tax is imposed by the local government, at municipal and county level. Assessment is composed of two things, the building value, and the site value. Property tax is the tax that supports local governments, local education, some med services, police and fire protection, and more.

States impose tax to real property in more ways than one. Some provide a millage, which is the amount of tax per thousand dollar. Others solve it per percentage of the market value. Some states provide equalization requirements so as to ensure uniformity statewide. Sometimes the increase of property tax can be limited, and sometimes it can be mandated after assessments. Certain taxpayers are also given abatements, such as the veterans and the senior group. Also, property tax rates can also be set by sub-divisions, not only by city but also by school boards, utility commissions, and fire departments.

In this map, it is shown how much property tax is required from property owners depending on which state they are in. New Jersey tops the rate with 2.38%, followed by Illinois with 2.32%, NH with 2.15%, and CT with 1.98%. On the extreme end, Hawaii only has 0.28%, Alabama has 0.43%, Louisiana has 0.51%, and Delaware has 0.55%
