Chris Hemsworth Workout: How Does The 'Thor' Star Gain And Lose Weight For His Movie Roles

Chris Hemsworth had to pack on a few pounds for the "Thor" movie five years ago. He needed to use 20 pounds more then. He had to look manly and overall strong to portray "Thor" in the most believable way. It was said that Chris Hemsworth hit the gym with trainer Duffy Gaver where he was given an old-school body building technique, with much focus on his arms and shoulders.

"People see Chris and they think he was on steroids, but he didn't touch a single substance. It was just red meat, heavy weights and some protein powder. He crushed every single workout. He simply decided to look like Thor." Gaver shares.

Chris successfully looked his best when he played "Thor". But now, he had to trim down the fat for his upcoming movie called "In The Heart Of The Sea". He has to eat about 1/4 of his normal food consumption to slim down his body.

For his preparation for his role in the new movie, Chris Hemsworth shares that they had to shoot the really slim part. They had to drop down to 500-700 calories daily for about a month. He had to starve a bit to look his best for the role of a sailor.

However, experts say that eating less than 1,200 calories on a daily basis is not healthy unless supervised by a doctor. Losing one to two pounds per week is fine, said Keri Gans, author or "The Small Change Diet". The nutritionist author even said, "I'm surprised he was able to learn his lines and act and perform because basically he's starving himself. I'm also surprised he wasn't irritable."

Considering that 500 calories per day is next to eating nothing, Chris definitely went far to work for a role. Federal guidelines suggest that a person as big as Chris, needs at least 2,400 calories a day to be able to maintain a healthy body and to perform his daily tasks.

“Basically, they starved him. It shows what people will do for a movie role.”, Keri Gans says.

Chris Hemsworth workout and diet must not be followed by just anybody. He was under a trainer's supervision in gaining weight, and it is also safe to assume that he did not venture into a weight loss diet without being supervised.
