"The Vampire Diaries" Season 7 executive producer Julie Plec recently talked about Alaric's (Matthew Davis) future in the upcoming installment. In an interview with Zap2It, Plec revealed that Alaric will be dealing with grief and loss in Season 7. With this, the character will turn to his darker side in order to survive.
Last season, Alaric's wife and unborn child died unexpectedly. Alaric, who was once close with Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), once again had to deal with the character's death. However, Plec revealed that she spoke with Davis before they filmed his emotional episode in Season 6.
"I told him we were doing that and he just looked at me and said, 'That's so mean...' and I was like, 'I know and I can't wait to see you do it.' I have this thing with Matt Davis. He's a good buddy of mine, a true good friend of mine. I really like to push him as an actor," she said.
Meanwhile, in order to cope with his loss, Alaric will turn to alcohol and he will also become interested in witchcraft.
"This is not an easy transition for him. He's already been through so much and now he's going through this. This is about as horrible and despicable a thing that could happen. He's not going to recover so easily. He's going to explore his grief in some unconventional ways involving a lot of booze and some secret desires that involve physics and witches and try to contact the dead and God knows what else," she said.
In other news, "The Vampire Diaries" will introduce several new characters in the upcoming season. According to Entertainment Weekly, actors Justice Leak, Jaiden Kaiden, Tim Kang and Todd Lasance will all join the cast as Malcolm, Zoo, Oscar and Julian, respectively.
"The Vampire Diaries" Season 7 will premiere on the CW on October 11.
