Antonio Banderas Stars as a Miner for a Movie of the 2010 Chilean Mine Disaster

In 2010, a Chilean mine shook the world as 33 miners got trapped for 69 days in a 200 story deep San Jose copper and gold mine with no sign of any hope from above.

Antonio Banderas leads the cast and will be playing as Mario Sepulveda, a miner who got trapped on the eve of his retirement. In the movie's trailer, the miners are seen to be surveying a rock, with the size of two Empire State Buildings, which shifted and completely blocked the only way in and out of the mine. Antonio then told his fellow miners "That's not a rock, that's the heart of the mountain. She finally broke."

The movie depicts the struggle of 33 miners to survive with 3- days- worth of emergency food and enduring a hundred degrees of Fahrenheit below the surface. It also shows the complex rescue procedures for the 33 miners while their families and friends wait outside.

During the movie's conceptualization, Producer Mike Medavoy shared that they developed the movie with the help of the miners, their families and rescue workers by sharing their personal stories during the San Jose mine incident.

At the beginning of the tragedy, no one heard anything from the miners for 17 days. As the days went on, some of their rescuers are wondering if it's too late for them to save the 33 due to the conditions they are facing. After 69 grueling days, the miners were saved and released on October 13, 2010.

The movie's cast includes Juliette Binoche, Mario Casas, Lou Diamn Phillips, Rodrigo Santoro, Gabriel Byrne and James Brolin.

Antonio Banderas also shared that "When I saw in the mirror that my tummy was very reduced and the bags really growing under my eyes, I thought that I could pull this off."

"The 33" movie will premiere on movie theaters in November 13.
