Google VS Microsoft : A Cultural Difference That Boils Down to Free Food

It's been stated that Microsoft offers free food for their employees, giving applicants enough motivation to choose their company. And numerous questions have been raised on why Google doesn't do the same. Some did pop a question regarding this matter at Quora asking on why Google doesn't have food like Microsoft? He was the given an honest logical answer by Amin Ariana, an ex-Google employee that was able to experience working in both companies.

To legitimize his response, Amin reminds that he's

"worked at both Microsoft and Google. They both have great food inside the campus to optimize the use of employee time."

As reported on FoodBeast, Ariana stated the following humorous facts that made its point in pointing out the difference between the two companies,

Microsoft culturally sees food through the lens of Star Wars: a capitalist empire with many free-market options that you vote for with your wallet. They pay you enough to think with your money.

Google culturally sees food through the lens of Star Trek: a socialist empire in search of truth, where the basics of life are made free for you to focus on the complicated. This also helps them in the competitive job market of Silicon Valley.

When I was at Microsoft, I lost weight. When I was at Google, I gained 15 pounds. I liked my work just the same. I suppose this means a thin capitalist and a fat socialist live within me.

She then added:

The most productive I've been, however, is working for my own start up - where I neither get paid nor can afford to have somebody else prepare the food.

Meaningful work and compensation are nearly independent variables.

Free food or not, both companies have been treating their employees fairly, giving them a room to grow and nourish their skills. Free food doesn't really affect the employee's performance, its still a matter of discipline and hard work.
