Check the Indicators

If there is a chance to hold your mails from coming pouring in the mail box, then do it. A huge pile of paper in the mailbox would somehow tip-off criminal minds about your house being left alone. And if holding mails or other deliveries are not possible, then simply ask your most trusted neighbor to check the mail and collect it for you while you're on vacation. For things like that would simply serve as an indicator for burglars. In addition to physical indicators, avoid posting your vacation schedules, for it would likewise serve as an invitation for thieves to rush in your house while you are away.

Be an Illusionist

In cases that you will be away for weeks, this would be handy. Any gadgets that has timer on it could be used by simply setting a particular time for on and off. This could be done with a television or even the with lights. This trick would be plainly simple yet effective to serve as an illusion that someone is inside the house. Also schedule some lawn mowing or snow removal service in case you will be away for too long. For the untrimmed grass or pile of snow outside might be interpreted as sign of no one being around the house. And if it will not be a bother for your neighbor, ask them to check on the service crew while their working.

Choose a trusted Partner

Since we have been mentioning thy neighbor since the start, it would be justifiable to add his service on the list. Ask your most trusted friend or neighbor to look at your home from time to time. In instances that you will away for a very long time, you may give him or her spare key in order to check on the house from the inside. If you think your friend or neighbor is trustworthy enough, then you may ask him to stay in the house if it okay with him/her.

The list stated above is absolutely incomplete in itself; however they would serve as a point of reference for further added home safety actions. For though security devices may be in place, burglars still may find their way in. Thus preventing them of having any knowledge that no one is occupying your house would be better than catching them doing the act itself.
