The nominations for the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards were already announced, and there were some big surprises for this year's set of nominees. The award show won't be until September 20, but it seems like there are already winners and some losers.
HBO's "Game of Thrones" received an astounding 24 nominations this year, breaking their record of 19 for last year. According to The Globe and Mail, the show is a top contender for the drama categories.
Peter Dinklage is nominated again this year for Outstanding Supporting Actor - Drama Series. Lena Headey and Emilia Clarke are also both nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress - Drama Series. Despite the controversial scenes and deaths of the show, it is also the top contender for Outstanding Drama Series.
However, according to Deadline, there are great shows that were snubbed this year. Although Taraji P. Henson was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for "Empire," the show was left out for the nomination for Outstanding Drama Series. It was also a disappointment that Terrence Howard wasn't also included in the list of nominees.
The series being overlooked became a shock to some since the Emmy's will air on Fox this year. However, Henson's nomination and also "How To Get Away With Murder" lead actress Viola Davis' nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series is a mark in the history of the TV Academy. This sets up the possibility that the first African American actress will win a top drama acting award.
Other big nominees come from "House of Cards," "Downtown Abbey," "Homeland," and "Mad Men." In the comedy category, there are new additions that are reportedly very deserving of the nominations like "Transparent" and "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt."
This year, it was also a big surprise that "Parks and Recreation" knocked out the fan favorite "The Big Bang Theory" from the list. Jim Parsons is also not included in the list of nominees for Outstanding Supporting Actor - Comedy Series.
