Game Studio Mojang To Shut Down ‘Scrolls’: Game Will Run Until July 2016, No New Contents Will Be Added

Game studio Mojang has announced this week that "Scrolls," the card-battle strategy game, will be shut down. This leaves the developer with one active game to its name, "Minecraft," less than a year after Microsoft acquired the game studio, PC Gamer reports.

As PC Gamer noted, Mojang said that the company could no longer guarantee the continuous development of the "Scrolls" video game, but it will provide smaller updates and vowed that the game's servers will continue to be operational until July 1, 2016. With this development, Mojang stressed that no feature or card set will be added for the game.

On Sunday, the "Scrolls" team explained via a community blog post the decision to permanently shut down the game. "The launch of the 'Scrolls' beta was a great success. Tens of thousands of players battled daily, and many of them remain active today. Unfortunately, the game has reached a point where it can no longer sustain continuous development," wrote the "Scrolls" team.

"We've had a great time working on 'Scrolls' and appreciate every last player who's downloaded our game. Extra big thanks to the most dedicated members of our community; some of you have logged in almost every day since release and dedicated a large portion of your time to dominating the leaderboards and taking care of new players. We salute you, honourable scrolldiers," continued the post.

According to Gamespot, the reported closure of the "Scrolls" video game comes less than a year after software giant Microsoft has acquired Mojang. This led to speculations that Mojang will likely develop a new game or the company will solely focus on "Minecraft."

It can be recalled that in August 2011, Mojang was dragged in a major controversy after Bethesda filed a lawsuit accusing Mojang of copyright infringement because the company used a trademark allegedly patented to Bethesda in its "Elder Scrolls" series. The case was resolved a year later, according to Gamespot.
