Will "Divergent" star Shailene Woodley get a second chance to play the role of Mary Jane for the Spider-Man franchise? Woodley was suppose to play Mary Jane in Marc Webb's "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" but was cut but was cut and now, with a new franchise reboot happening, "The Fault In Our Stars" actress says she's still interested.
"Oh, yeah. I didn't know that, actually. That's amazing. Um, heck yeah!" quoted Clevver Movies of the 23-year-old.
The actress was surprised and obviously wasn't aware of the Sony/ Marvel deal for the franchise probably because of her busy schedule.
Cinema Blend recalls how the "Insurgent" star landed the role, filmed some scenes and even appeared in the trailers (behind-the-scenes) but unfortunately never made it to the big screen.
"Unfortunately, there was a lot going on in the sequel already: Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man continued his search for answers surrounding his parents' disappearance; Paul Giamatti's Rhino was rampaging for a hot second; Jamie Foxx's Electro was going haywire; Dane DeHaan was transforming into the demonic Green Goblin; and, of course, that thing that happened to Emma Stone' Gwen Stacy at the end. Given all these factors, the producers thought it best to save Shailene Woodley's debut for a later time," summarized the site.
However, with the new set up for the franchise and its entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Woodley will probably never get a chance to be featured in upcoming sequels as Marvel is rumored to be chucking "The Amazing Spider-Man" series to make its own version.
It was announced last month that Sony will be bringing Marvel into the Spider-Man world.
"Under the deal, the new Spider-Man will first appear in a Marvel film from Marvel's Cinematic Universe (MCU). Sony Pictures will thereafter release the next installment of its $4 billion Spider-Man franchise, on July 28, 2017, in a film that will be co-produced by Kevin Feige and his expert team at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago. Together, they will collaborate on a new creative direction for the web slinger. Sony Pictures will continue to finance, distribute, own and have final creative control of the Spider-Man films."
Directed by Neil Burger, "Insurgent," the second installment in the "Divergent" series is scheduled to be released in theaters March 20, 2015. The third and final book of the series, written by Veronica Roth, will be split into two parts and released a year apart. "Allegiant" part 1 is due out March 2016 and part 2 will follow in March 2017.
