'Home Alone' House in Illinois Sells for $5M Days Before Christmas

The house featured in the hit 1990 film "Home Alone" has found its buyer just days before the Christmas holiday.

The "Home Alone" house in Winnetka, Illinois was put up for sale in May for $5.25 million. The house attracted national attention after it was listed on the market, with its listing agents receiving offers from buyers less than a week after listing. This included Macaulay Culkin, who played Kevin McCallister in the movie.

"I had half a mind to buy it − just for giggles," he told Entertainment Weekly. "I got kids. I'm a busy man."

The House's History

The home, specifically its exterior, was famously used as the McCallister's family home in the 1990 "Home Alone" film and its second installation in 1992, "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York."

It is currently owned by Tim and Trisha Johnson, who purchased the property in 2012 for $1.585 million, per Mansion Global. They renovated the property in 2018 and decided to list the house earlier this year to take advantage of market conditions.

The property features five bedrooms and six bathrooms across 9,126 square feet of living area. The house was built in 1921 on a 0.53-acre lot hidden behind a wrought-iron gate. Many of the house's architectural details and integrity were maintained by the current owners, including its foyer, entry staircase, coffered ceilings, French doors that open to the backyard area, a gym, and a private movie theater, per its Zillow listing.

What Are the Home's Other Features?

The house has multiple amenities, including a gourmet kitchen, a hidden pantry, an integrated Sub-Zero fridge, a built-in banquette, a screened-in porch, four fireplaces including one that burns wood, two laundry rooms, a mudroom, a wet bar, recreation space, and an indoor sports court with a true point-line.

Upstairs, there is a luxurious primary suite with a walk-in closet and two hot tubs. There are also three additional bedrooms, one with an ensuite bathroom. Furthermore, there is an old attic that has been converted into a junior primary suite.

It was not immediately clear who the buyers were.
