When Is the Best Time to Start Home Renovation?

Renovations can be done any time of the year, especially when it involves urgent repairs. That being said, renovations are costly. However, taking some time to plan for your remodeling project can help save time and money. If you plan on starting home renovations, here's a quick guide.

How Much Does Home Renovation Cost?

The cost of remodeling and renovating your home can differ based on the project. Additionally, certain rooms, such as the kitchen and bathroom, cost more to renovate than others due to the labor and craftsmanship required.

In general, a mid-range kitchen remodel can cost over $22,000, while a major renovation can cost as much as $131,000. If you're planning to add a primary suite to your home, you should expect to spend as much as $271,470, according to Remodeling Magazine.

Renovating in the Winter Season

Typically, colder months can be more cost-efficient as they are considered the off-season period. During these months, builders and contractors tend to tack their prices down. In addition, it is easier to get a permit as authorities granting permission for remodeling projects are less likely to be swamped with paperwork.

Having said that, the weather conditions during the winter season may make it harder for builders to break groups or set up necessary construction materials needed for the project. Sudden snowstorms may also force you to suspend remodeling work for days. Sudden temperature drops may also lead to higher heating costs and lower work morale as workers battle colds to stay on schedule.

Best Time for Home Renovations

Industry professionals recommend starting renovation projects in the fall for a few reasons. First, this is a lull period for builders and contractors, which means their services will be priced lower than in the peak summer months. Second, materials typically cost less during the off-season. Lastly, renovation projects you begin in the fall could be finished before the holiday season.

Some of the best remodeling projects in the fall include landscaping, winterizing your air conditioning unit, roof repairs, and attics and basements. The latter is especially true when you need to buy appliances. Retailers offer plenty of deals during the fall season to make room for next year's new appliances.
