Whether you're moving to a new city for work, school, or a relationship, or it's just time for a change in your living situation, apartment hunting can be both stressful and exhilarating. In North America, the average person moves 11.4 times in their life, with most of them happening in the first half of their life.

With that many moves in a lifetime, you don't want to have to move unnecessarily, and that means finding the perfect apartment the first time around.

These are the top 5 qualities to look for every time you start looking for apartments for rent.

#1 Neighborhood

Where you live has a major impact on your quality of life. Your neighborhood should have the things that bring you happiness. Do you want to be close to the nightlife and great restaurants? Or do you prefer peace and quiet over everything else?

Your choice of neighborhood can also be a leading factor in determining the price. Don't be afraid to look for similar neighborhoods in further-out places. Find your hidden gem!

#2 Building Amenities

If you're keen on getting a pool, gym, or even a rooftop deck in your building, you're likely going to want to look for a place to rent in a newer condo building. It's important to note that in a condo, you're likely dealing with a landlord who only owns one or a handful of units, not the whole building.

#3 Space

Space comes at a premium these days, but cramming yourself into too small of an apartment can make life stressful and cramped.

Make an honest assessment of your space needs. Are you moving alone, with a partner, or do you plan on looking for roommates? Do you have a big dog who will loom large in a studio apartment?

Not only should you be looking at the number of bedrooms advertised in an apartment, but you want to pay attention to the layout, the total square footage, and the size of individual rooms. For example, many condos come with a "den," which is an area off to the side of the living room or kitchen but not fully walled off. The classic condo den can work as a home office but won't be private enough to provide a second bedroom.

#4 Transit Access and Transportation

Do you drive to work, or do you want a quick hop on the subway to get to the office? Quick and easy transit access is an important feature if you live a car-free or car-light lifestyle.

If you're an avid cyclist or prefer walking to your destinations, check for things like bike lanes between you and your destination, and look up the Walk Score for the address.

#5 Natural Light

Whether or not you enjoy your new apartment might all come down to natural light. Natural light is a powerful mood booster, reducing stress and improving your mental health all around. Plus, an abundance of natural light will mean your plants can thrive.

With this checklist, you can make sure you find the perfect apartment when you next move.
