5 Overrated Organizing Tools That Do NOT Really Help Anyone

The coronavirus global pandemic allowed people to embark on much-needed home improvement projects. While some dedicated their lockdown time to home renovations, others establish a system to get their daily lives in order.

Jumping on a home organization project also means having an impulse to shop for trendy organizational tools. The Instagram-worthy organized pantries, fridges, and desks made people want to replicate it in their own homes and make the organization goddess, a.k.a Marie Kondo, proud.

So they found themselves shopping for baskets, acrylic containers, and other space-saving storage tools. Unfortunately, instead of getting their lives in order, these overhyped organizing tools even made the method worst.

Below are some of the overrated organizing tools that are not worth the hype, your money, and a space in your house.

Lazy Susan

Eagerness to achieve an aesthetic pantry probably leads you to shop for a lazy susan online. This trendy tool is meant to organize condiments in the kitchen, perfumes in the closet, and even cleaning and school materials.

However, Shannon Krause of Tidy Nest thinks that lazy susans are not as convenient as they seem.

"They are used in pantries, kitchens, bathrooms, playrooms, but if you spin them with any kind of speed, you'll notice that the products fall over or fly off the turntable nearly every time," Krause told Apartment Therapy.

If you choose to fall for the trend, you might as well look for a lazy susan with a backstop or a high-sided compartment.

"The items are nicely contained within the walls and can withstand turning speeds," Krause explained.

Round Containers

Using trendy round storage containers for decanting food goods may be pleasing to the eye but not really space-friendly. Instead, you may opt to use square or rectangular containers that don't occupy much of your coveted space.

"We only use square or rectangular shaped containers so they can sit right next to each other without wasting space," Krause said.

Gigantic Storage Bins

Huge storage bins are not necessary when you try to organize your house. Instead of being a functional item, it ends up as a vast dump bin for things you no longer use or don't want to see.

Besides being too heavy to maneuver, Krause said that big storage bins are also hard to store since they require bigger space. Instead, Krause suggests using storage bins not bigger than a 74-quart size.

Nontransparent Containers

If the goal is to hide clutter inside the box, then an opaque container is perfect for the job. However, it is not a practical storage and organizing solution since you will have to label each bin.

"If your opaque bins are not labeled clearly or the labels fall off, you'll be lost and find yourself unstacking and opening up bins over and over to figure out what they actually contain.," Krause added.

Countertop Spice Racks

Displaying all spices on your countertop is not a good idea, especially if you do not use them often. Keeping the spices in the cabinet or kitchen drawer will provide not only a clutter-free countertop but also a better kitchen workflow.
