For new homeowners, the garden and the yard are essential facets of their outdoors. Their grounds may or may not have a swimming pool, but they already see a garden in their minds from the time to decide to purchase their very own home.

This means that lawn maintenance is something that new house owners should learn, or at least, be conscious about. Having the perfect lawn like what you see in architecture magazines takes some work.

Here are the things you need to learn about grass maintenance and how to achieve that perfect lawn.

1. Mow the lawn regularly

Consistent maintenance is good for the grass and the soil. Also, it would bring beauty into your garden while avoiding that ramshackle look of uncut grass and weeds.

However, you have to remember that mowing the lawn too frequently might be damaging. Ironically, too much mowing can also promote the growth of weeds. Lawn maintenance experts recommended an interval of five to seven days between mowing. That should give enough time for the grass to need maintenance but without looking neglected.

2. Schedule other landscaping maintenance work

We often forget certain tasks we set for ourselves unless we write them down on a To-Do list. We can be more organized if we know in advance what we need to do for the week or even the entire month ahead.

If your schedule for the coming weekend is to mow the lawn or do other maintenance chores such as fertilizing the soil and trimming the hedges, you will be able to be on top of things and won't feel overwhelmed by the things you have to do.

3. Avoid having too much fertilizer

Fertilizers are good for the soil and, therefore, for the plants, trees, and other organisms. But too much fertilizer can cause fertilizer burn. This is the condition when the grass or the plants begin to have streaks of brown or yellow.

What causes this is an excess of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, which are the main ingredients of both home-made and commercial fertilizers. When this happens, stop using fertilizers and water the lawn more until it regains its original green hue in a couple of weeks.

4. Make sure the lawn is getting enough water

The common ways of watering the lawn are using a handheld sprinkler or hosing them down. Some people install ground sprinkler systems that are set to turn on at a given time programmed by the owner.

This is beneficial only if the sprinklers would be able to reach even the farthest corners of the lawn. How much water is recommended? About one inch to one-half inch of water, done every two or three days. That would be better ideal than watering them every day so the lawn won't be immersed too much in the water.

5. Always remove weeds

This is very important because the weeds can choke the life out of the grass, stealing the nutrients from the soil. They should be plucked out or destroyed from the moment they start to sprout forth from the ground; otherwise, weeds have a way of spreading throughout your garden and your entire yard.

If necessary, you can get those pre-emergent herbicides or weed killers available online or from gardening stores. This would also protect your lawn from crabgrass, which is another form of weed.
