A home is one place where you should always feel safe and secure. But unfortunately, some burglars will take the opportunity they can get to steal your valuables. That's why it's a good idea to keep your home secure from uninvited visitors, whether you're at home or not.

There are many ways to secure a home. And you don't even need to spend a lot of money to make it thief-proof. But if you can shed some extra dollars for a few affordable security features, why not?! It is for your peace of mind, after all.

Here are a few ways you can make your home safer.

  • Make sure the doors are secure

This may seem obvious, but the doors are the best entry and exit way to any home. Make sure that they're sturdy and are attached with strong and tight hinges. If there is a mail slot, it shouldn't be too big or too wide that burglars will be able to insert a tool that can unlock the door from the inside.

Remember this for all the doors that lead into the house. To make it more burglar-proof, you can add doorjamb support in case thieves try to break down your door. If you have the budget, you can invest in security cameras.

  • Secure the windows

Have you ever heard of " a window of opportunity?" Apparently, burglars love that quote. Make sure you leave all windows locked and reinforced every time you go out or go to sleep. Do the same for every window in the house in every room.

You can also invest a few bucks in a window detecting system. These usually sound an alarm if a window has been broken.

To avoid tempting bad guys in the first place, hang some curtains so people outside won't be able to see your valuables or observe your habits.

  • Opt for a brighter home

Homes that are littered with lights in the right places can help deter thieves and burglars. Make sure you put up lights in dark corners where thieves can sneak into.

Also, keep the yard clean, so you can easily spot if anything is missing or out of place. You can also put up motion-sensing lights and build a good fence around the yard to keep trespassers out.

  • Befriend your neighbors

Befriending your neighbors comes with a lot of benefits. Aside from being able to leave your pet when you're off to work, you can also have them make occasional checks on your home.

You don't have to be friends with all of them. But getting to know one or two is like getting an extra pair of eyes to watch your house when you're not at home. And who knows, they may also tell you more tips as to how they keep their own homes secure from burglars.

  • Make necessary changes

If you've just moved into a brand new home, find out what you need to know about home security systems. Then, change the ones used by the previous owner. This will prevent people like family members of the previous owner who have keys from entering your home.
