'DotA 2' Update & Download: Online Game Sets Steam Record, But 'League of Legends' Still Better?

The online game "Defense of the Ancients (DotA) 2" has slowly been rising in popularity among other games of the same kind. Word is out that the popular PC game has gotten more than a million players over the weekend.

According to PC Gamer, a record 1,075,464 players were logged in at the same time on Steam over the weekend to battle it out with other players on the popular multi-player game developed by Valve.

The number is among the highest ever recorded for concurrent players active on a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) by Steam, the content delivery platform of Valve.

"DotA 2" beat other MOBA game titles during the weekend. This included another game made by Valve, "Counter Strike: Global Offensive." The game, which took second place over the weekend in Steam, recorded a distant 420,000 concurrent players, or less than half of the number "DotA 2" garnered.

It seems that the update made on the game, dubbed as New Bloom, played a major part in the huge increase of players as it brought a new mode, called the Year Beast Brawl.

According to the "DotA 2" website, the Year Beast Brawl is a new feature that gives players extra assistance from the beast assigned to them. "Every 5 minutes during the battle the Year Beasts will appear, charging down the lanes toward the opposing team," described its gameplay.

Meanwhile, Game Rant noted that the third place went to another Valve-developed game, "Team Fortress 2." The multiplayer shooting game had 80,000 concurrent users logged in over the weekend.

The fourth spot was taken by "Football Manager 2015," with a total record of 70,000 concurrent users. The game developed by Sports Interactive was the highest game to be recorded during the weekend that was not from Valve.

While the record number was very astonishing for the game and its developer, "DotA 2" is still no match to the "League of Legends."

The MOBA game developed by Riot Games remains at the top spot for the number of concurrent players recorded. In October 2012, the developer behind the popular videogame announced that a staggering five million concurrent players were recorded participating during peak hours, said PC Gamer.

However, with such a huge number of following, it is no wonder that a game of that scope would encounter problems and issues along the way.

In January, Game Rant reported that the video game became a victim of a cyber attack that aimed to obtain player data. The developer, along with the help of Trend Micro, went to fix the issue and rid the game of any virus.

Riot Games' "League of Legends" also addressed the verbal abuse prevalent among the players of the game. The company behind the famous MOBA game implemented a "ban system" for players who become toxic to the enjoyment of others, reported Game Rant.
