'X-Men: Apocalypse' Cast, Plot & Release Date: Ian McKellen Returns As Magneto? [Rumors]

Filming for the upcoming "X-Men: Apocalypse" movie has not even begun, but many fans are already eager for its film release. Reports have circulated that some actors would be back to reprise their roles in the movie, including Ian McKellen as Magneto.

Not much has been released about the plot of the movie but the last clip in "X-Men: Days of Future Past" revealed the next enemy the mutants would be facing in the upcoming film.

Apocalypse, as shown in the short clip, has been around as far back as ancient Egypt, said Cinema Blend. It was also noted that he probably is the first mutant ever to come alive.

While it's not clear how the story would evolve in the coming "X-Men: Apocalypse" movie, it remains clear from the title that his character would play a huge part in the film.

The movie's timeline would be set 10 years after the previous movie, which is 1983. With this storyline, viewers could expect younger versions of their favorite mutant characters.

As the movie is set at an earlier timeline, it was confirmed that Patrick Stewart would not be back to play Professor X, reported Hypable.

According to Stewart, "It seems to be very unlikely that I will be in the next X-Men movie, which is almost getting ready to start shooting in Montreal. But Magneto, Ian McKellen, is certainly going to be in it."

Because of the plot's timeline, many fans  speculated on how Ian McKellen's Magneto would fit in the story. One theory presented by Master Herald is the fact that Magneto was the last mutant to fight against Apocalypse or En Sabah Nur, and it could be that producers would spin him in the story through this plot.

Another possibility brought forth by Comic Book is when Legion, Professor X's son, went back in time to kill Magneto but ended up killing Xavier instead. The accident led the future Magneto to establish the first X-Men in honor of his friend.

However, McKellen has not confirmed this statement yet.

Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, and Nicholas Hoult would return to reprise their roles in the movie. Evan Peters would also return as Quicksilver in "X-Men: Apocalypse." Meanwhile, "Game of Thrones" actress, Sophie Turner was casted to play the young Jean Grey in the upcoming movie.

"X-Men: Apocalypse" will hit theaters on May 27, 2017.
