The TV adaptation of Diana Gabaldon's well-loved time traveling series has garnered a strong following among TV viewers and accolades from award-giving bodies, however, it seems that one award "snub" made the fans really unhappy.

ABC News previously reported on the full list of the nominees for the upcoming Golden Globes 2016. The nominations for "Outlander" include Best TV Drama Series, Caitriona Balfe with Best TV Actress for Drama and Tobias Menzies with Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Limited-Series or TV Movie.

Balfe plays the role of Claire Randall who was transported in another time in the past and met the love of her life, Jamie. Menzies, on the other hand, has a dual role playing as Frank, Claire's husband and Jonathan "Black Jack" Randall, Frank's ancestor and the main antagonist of the series.

According to Evening Times UK, "Outlander" fans went mad after Irish actor Sam Heughan missed out a Golden Globes nomination for his portrayal of Jamie Frasier. His performance in a controversial episode where his character experiences a brutal assault from Black Jack was highly praised by viewers.

Some of the notable tweets about Heughan's Golden Globes snub came from Twitter user @OL_America and @LaurelSchuett, who also attached a still from the series where Heughan's character was tortured.

"VERY happy for #Outlander, @caitrionambalfe & @TobiasMenzies but HEARTBROKEN for @SamHeughan. NO MALE LEAD DID IT BETTER THAN SAM!" the user said in the tweet.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, "Outlander" showrunner Ron D. Moore also shared their laments but he is positive that there is still hope for next year. He considered Heughan along with Balfe and Menzies as the "big three" of the Starz series.

“It’s just a very competitive year, a very tough field. I wish Sam was included, but in our hearts he absolutely is because he’s incredibly deserving," Moore said.

On a more positive note, Moore teased about the actor's future in the upcoming season. He said that Season 2 will focus on his "slow-building" arc which is different from the Claire-rich first season.
