The 30th anniversary celebration of the Jordan brand's collaboration with Nike continues with the release of a new colorway for one of its revamped sneaker design, the Air Jordan 13 Retro Low.
Officially tagged as the white/ midnight navy/ turquoise blue/ metallic silver color or "midnight navy," this design for the Air Jordan 13 Retro Low also goes by the name "Hornets."
According to Sneaker News, the shoe design gets its inspiration from two symbolisms of Michael Jordan's collegiate career in North Carolina. The "midnight navy" design reflects the iconic basketball player's history in the Hornets and Tar Heels.
In fact, hints of turquoise blue in the shoe's outsole seemed very similar to the shade of blue found in the Charlotte's uniform which earned the shoe the nickname of "Hornets."
The new design is very simple with its combination of just the right amount of white and midnight blue colors. The sneaker's upper body is made of white tumbled leather that adds texture.
Meanwhile, hints of midnight navy could be found in the shoe's tongue, shoelaces, heel area, and midsole. A touch of metallic silver comes in the form of the Jumpman logo situated at the upper part of the ankle area. The silver replaced the classic Jumpman hologram that comes with other Air Jordan shoes, noted Sneaker Bar Detroit.
Touches of turquoise are found on the outsole as well as the stitched Jumpman logo in the tongue, a subtle but fitting tribute to the Hornets.
The simplicity of the design belies the rich history that comes with the original Air Jordan 13. Bleacher Report wrote that the first AJ 13s was released in 1997, which got its inspiration from the jungle animal black panther.
Jordan's graceful moves in the court have been compared to the movements of this black animal. It was the design that the Chicago Bulls' all-time star wore on his last season to lead their team on its sixth championship trophy as well.
It was also the pair he reportedly donned on the night he finally broke the record for "most consecutive games scoring double figures," which was previously held by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
The Air Jordan 13 Retro Low "Midnight Navy" would be available in Nike stores and Nike.com starting April 24. For those who want to cop a pair early, these shoes may be available in eBay.
The shoe would be available at $160 a pair, while grade school sizes would be sold at $120.
