Home and Design: Does the Color of Your Room Affect Your Mood?

If you are looking to repaint the walls of your home, then you might want to think twice about choosing your favorite color and go instead for one that would work best for you and help improve your mood. Which color works best for the bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and the living room?

Color has been known for having a relation to a person's mood. This is one of the reasons why artists and interior designers also study the psychology behind different colors and how it can affect a person's mood and emotions.

According to About Health, colors can be "a powerful communication tool and can be used to signal action, influence mood, and cause physiological reactions." Given its effects towards one's emotions and feelings, one should choose carefully on the colors of a specific room depending on its use and purpose.

House Beautiful notes that the U.K.-based fabric designer Vanessa Arbuthnott has created an infographic to simplify the ways in which color can alter your mind and affect your mood. This is a great guide for painters, designers and DIY-ers who are looking into choosing the colors of a certain room.

For instance, the color blue works best for bedrooms and offices because it represents serenity, intelligence and protection. This color is said to be most beneficial for students because those who were exposed to this color prior to their exams received better results. One should, however, be cautious about the use of this color as too much blue in a room can also give off the feeling of being unwelcome.

The color green, on the other hand, represents nature, balance and wealth. This color is said to work best for bedrooms because of its calming nature.

You may also consider painting the kitchen and bathrooms with the color yellow because it helps create enthusiasm and promote confidence. Orange also works best in living and dining rooms because of its motivational qualities.
